Surfing

How many surf sessions will I have?
You’ll join 5 coached sessions (1.5–2 hours each) over the 6 nights. Sessions are in small groups — max 5 women per coach. You’ll also have the option to free surf outside of lessons.

Do I need my own board?
No. We have boards available, and we’ll also hire extras if you need a specific size - this is included in your retreat price.

Do I need to be fit to join?
Not at all, but you  need to be able to swim. Surfing will build your strength and stamina naturally. You can take each day at your own pace. Pre-arrival we will send you a 'get surf ready' plan with some suggestions for mobility and strength movement to help you prepare.

Can I come alone?
Yes, absolutely.

What if I feel nervous in the ocean?
That’s normal. Our coaching focuses on building both skills and confidence so you always feel safe and supported.

Will there be time to relax?
Yes. This is your holiday as much as it is your chance to progress. We balance focused surf time with recovery, and you choose whether to join optional yoga or excursions. Nothing will be force on you. Your holiday, your choice.

What should I bring?

  • Strong reef-safe sunscreen

  • Rash vest or long-sleeved surf top (no wetsuit needed — the water is warm year-round)

  • Swimwear

  • Your favourite wax or surf accessories if you have them

I’m not sure which retreat week is right for me.
No problem. Each week is designed for a different level: Whitewater Builder, Green Wave Improver or Independent surfer. You can use our Level Guide here, take a short quiz, or message us directly - we’ll help you choose the right week before booking.

Location & Surroundings

How many people live in Sri Lanka?
Around 22 million. The country is a blend of cultures, influenced by Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity.

Where exactly are you located?
The Sevana is set in a small, quiet village, set inland near Talalla, in Sri Lanka’s southern Matara District. The direct area around the retreat is peaceful and rural - perfect for rest and recovery between surf sessions.

What if I want to explore nearby?

Tuk tuks are easily available from the retreat and there is an app called PickMe (Sri Lankan uber):

  • Kekanadura - just 5 minutes away for local shops and essentials.

  • Dikwella & Hiriketiya – about 15 minutes away, offering a lively surf and social scene. Here you’ll find well-known restaurants and bars such as the award-winning Smoke & Bitters and other various beachside cafes, bars and food spots.

What’s around Talalla itself?
Talalla is known for its tranquil bay, golden sandy beach, calm swimming spots, peaceful sunsets and local cafés. It’s a place to unwind, connect with nature and soak up coastal living without large crowds.

What can I see in Matara?
Matara is the administrative capital of Matara District, in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka, and about 20-30 minutes by car from Talalla. It has a rich history and lots to explore:

  • Matara Fort & Star Fort — colonial forts with scenic views and historical architecture.

  • Old Nupe Market — for local shopping, snacks, and atmosphere.

  • Weherahena Temple — known for its large seated Buddha statue and colourful paintings.

  • Polhena Beach — calm reef-protected swimming, snorkelling with turtles, and relaxing.

What other day-trips are possible?
Yes! If you want to explore further. Examples include

  • Mirissa (≈ 50 mins away) for whale/dolphin watching and beach cafés.

  • Polhena: (≈ 30 mins away) snorkelling with turtles

  • Other coastal towns, local markets, temples, tea plantations in the region.

Travel & Logistics

How do I get there?

You fly into Bandaranaike International Airport, which is in Negombo. This is about 32.5km from the centre of the capital, Colombo.

Talalla is about 2hrs and 45 mins by car from the airport.. You have a few options:

  • Private car / transfer - the fastest and most comfortable way. I can help arrange this at an additional cost (paid directly to the driver, at around USD90 each way)

  • Highway bus to Matara - regular air-conditioned express buses run from Colombo (Makumbura bus station, so you would have to get there from the airport) to Matara via the Southern Expressway. From Matara, it’s about 20–30 minutes by tuk tuk or car to Talalla.

  • Train to Matara - trains run from Colombo along the coast to Matara. Journey time is longer (4–6 hours depending on the train). So again, you would need to get to the train station from the airport and then at the other end from Matara station, you can take a tuk tuk or taxi to Talalla.

Do I need a visa?
Yes. Most travellers apply online for an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) before arriving. Check the Sri Lankan government website for current details - https://eta.gov.lk/slvisa/

Do I need travel insurance?
Yes - this is required for all guests and you may be asked for proof before arrival. Your insurance must cover water sports, including surfing.

Practicalities

What should I pack?

  • Swimwear + rash vest

  • Light, breathable clothing

  • Strong sunscreen & hat

  • Insect repellent

  • Travel adapter (Sri Lanka uses Type D/G sockets)

  • Personal medications

What should I wear outside the retreat?
Sri Lanka is a relatively conservative country. While beachwear is perfectly fine at the beach or pool, it’s preferred that tourists don’t walk around towns or villages in swimsuits alone. Lightweight cover-ups, shorts, and dresses are ideal for moving between the retreat and local areas.

What if I want to visit a temple?
When visiting temples or religious sites, clothing that covers your shoulders and knees is essential. A light scarf or shawl can be very useful to carry with you

Is Wi-Fi available?
Yes, Wi-Fi is available at the hotel.

What about food and dietary needs?
Our chef prepares fresh, nutritious meals daily. We can cater for most dietary needs (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, etc.) - just let us know in advance.

Is yoga included?
The retreat includes access to our yoga area for your own practice. Classes are not part of the package, but private or group sessions can be arranged separately.

Is there a gym?
Yes - you’ll have access to our gym and recovery equipment throughout your stay.
